Ten Rules for Being Human

1.) You will receive a body. You many like it or hate it, but it is yours for the entire period.

2.) You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called "life".

3.) There are no mistakes, only lessons. Growth is a process of trial, error and experimentation. The failed experiments are as much a part of the process as those that ultimately work.

4.) Lessons are repeated until they are learned. A lesson will be repeated to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can go on to the next lesson.

5.) Learning lessons does not end. There's no part of life that doesn't contain its lessons. If you're alive, then it means there are still lessons to learn.

6.) "there" is no better place to be than "here". When you're "there" becomes a "here" you will simply obtain another "there". (When 'x' occurs, then I will be happy. ('X' is always changing).

7.) Other people are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8.) What you make of your life is up to you. you have all the tools and resources you need. What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.

9.) Your answers lie within you. The answers to life's questions lie within you. All you need is to look, listen and trust. If you don't trust, learn that, too.

10.) You will forget all this.

a few friends and I got together this weekend and without intent, ate a lot of wings. chicken wings. buffalo wings. whatever.

- weird blue cheese (refrigerated too much)

jeez - i have been living under a rock. i mean really, where have i been?? note: when buying a house, prepare to sacrifice your life for some time.

ok, so i've been looking for a place like this for awhile: a cool joint, good looking people, good food and beats. like loungy beats and loungy vibe. not stupid club stuff.

the food we had was pretty good - soy marinated cod, beef on a grass stick thing with peanut sauce and then we also had good tea and this papaya salad with shrimp. i am sick right now so didn't really want to hang out late but i'm gonna go back for sure and do the late night beats, tea and dancing bit. check it out:

Peel -- this thing is really cool - it's an RSS reader for mp3 blogs. it shows you mp3's from blogs that you ask it to pull from and then gives you the chance to download them for yourself. it connects to itunes but it also is a player. only drawback is that you have to hit apple+d to get them to download, it doesn't do it automatically. but it's awesome anyway.

mojave phone booth movie

there was this phone booth. it was in the desert. in the middle of nowhere. used by the military base back in the 50's and 60's. someone or other got a hold of the number, posted it online and random people started calling it. more importantly, even more random people started showing up to see if it would ring. then they'd ask the person on the other line for advice.

read the synopsis. try to see the movie at your local film fest. it's not sold yet and not yet being distributed.

In the middle of the Mojave desert, rests an abandoned phone booth, riddled with bullet holes, graffiti, its windows broken, but otherwise functioning. Its identity was born on the internet, and for years travellers would make the trek down a lonely dirt road and camp next to the booth, in the hopes that it might suddenly ring, and they could connect with a stranger (often from another country) on the other end of the line.

This is the story of four disparate people whose lives intersect with this mystical outpost. With themes of love, death, the mystery of the universe, and the phenomenon of inter-connectivity, Mojave Phone Booth pitches us deep into the lives and psyches of these working class people in Las Vegas.

Front Porch SF - "Good Frickin' Chicken"

What can you say about a place that serves corn-meal fried chicken, fried chicken livers, clean cole slaw and juicy pork chops and King Cobra tall boys? Good spot for a date but also works for a man date as you never know who you might meet while eating chicken livers. There's gonna be a wait but, if you wait till the people at the bar waiting for a table get sat, you can squeeze in pretty quick. Don't get over zealous on the chicken - unless you've got 4 people eating it, get the single serving. I ate chicken for four meals in a row once when my date and I ordered the bucket.

Sarah Silverman at Cobb's Feb 9th and 10th

Deliciously lewd Sarah Silverman is playing at Cobb's in February. If you haven't seen her Jesus is Magic DVD yet , you'll be embarrassed at the wrong stuff you're laughing about. I like the one about how shocked she was on 9/11 -- because that's the day she found out that the Soy Chai latte at Starbucks was 611 calories.

TV on the Radio to Play SF

breakout band TV on the Radio will be playing SF come the end of March at The Fillmore. If you haven't yet listened to their new record "Return to Cookie Mountain", you need to. TVOTR was recently on the cover of Spin and also played this year's Download Festival with the likes of Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, The Shins etc. etc. I think every single one of those bands flat out told the audience that they needed to cop TVOTR's new joint.

Anyway, there are a bunch of other shows they are playing here in the US, including even the smaller markets like Salt Lake City. So, go see them. Will be a heavily sought after ticket and shouldn't disappoint.

Notes on a Scandal

Notes on a Scandal is a vicious tale of two women inextricably linked by a scandalous secret which ultimately destroys one set of lives while 'outing' another. This is one of the better movies I've seen in some time - starring Cate Blanchett and a devil-like and vindictive Judi Dench who plays a creepy old hag who is in a delusional fantasy throughout the story. Cate's character, a school teacher, gets involved with a 15 year old student and they begin an affair. Judi Dench catches the teacher and the student in a compromising position and leverages this knowledge to get closer to the teacher, who she has obsessive fantasies about. I'm not going to write any more about it except to say that you should go see this movie. It's thrilling, suspense ful, creepy and full of drama. Just like I like it....

man, i can't wait for this. Jason is coming in from Boise and this is just gonna rock. Tickets are already sold out for Tuesday and Thursday. By now, probably Wednesday too. I remember the first time I saw these guys in Salt Lake City about 10 years ago. I hadn't fully drank the juice yet and they did that song about not wanting to be white or whatever or hating white people or something like that i got all confused and upset. i had a lot to learn.

i went to the cat power show last night with scott and justin. we marveled at her. not lustfully just in awe. next day: airport. on my way to a business trip and voila - cat power. we talked and she walked me to my gate, gave me a sweet kiss and waited till i was all the way on the plane before she left. nice of her. haunted soul. enchanting music.

Pete Rock

Went to Club 6 last night to check out Pete Rock. I'll post photos soon. It's amazing to think about all the stuff he has touched in his career from the Nas tracks to his work with CL to the stuff he's doing with Wu and his solo stuff. Much more a producer than a DJ he spun through some great old tracks and a lot of my e. coast favorites: EPMD, Das EFX, KRS-1, Mobb Deep, De La, Tribe, etc. etc.

Good stuff --- if you haven't really heard much e. coast hip hop and you're wanting to learn more, he's definitely a good place to start. From him, you can branch out into a bunch of different artists and crews which in my opinion, encompass everything that was great about early to mid 90's hip hop in New York.

Big College Football Weekend

If you're going to pick one weekend to finally tune into some college football, this would be your weekend. Of course there's the one everyone is talking about: Ohio State v. Michigan (3PM EST) but there's also a bunch of other games, including USC vs. Cal (8PM EST) which us in SF will be paying close attention to - especially after last week's depressing loss against AZ. Still, I can't believe Cal is #17 in the country. Tell me a team like Rutgers (who is #7), who beat up on teams like Howard (??) could beat the top 5 teams in the Pac-10, not to mention the SEC. Actually, I don't know sh*t about college football.

Cheese Smart

Finally. Being clueless about cheese I've finally found someone who can help me figure out the difference between a Guyere and Goat Cheese. The Cheese School of San Francisco has classes like 'Cheese Selection, Service and Storage', 'Cheeses of France', 'Extreme (!!!) Cheese' and a 'Basic Cheese Primer'. Prices look to be around $60 for most two hour classes although they have several 'drop in' nights for $25 per person. They have wine and beverage pairings they walk you through and their own dedicated cheese school location (fancy).

Classes are sponsored by Cheese Plus, which I've never been to. Personally, I like the cheese selection at Rainbow Grocery. Their punk rock lesbian cheese staff are really nice, very helpful and know their cheeses.

I wonder if knowing stuff about cheese helps on dates. I wonder....

Zion National Park, Utah

Mom dukes and I went to Zion the weekend of the St. George Marathon in St. George Utah. I was reading Jon Krakauer's book, Under the Banner of Heaven so all I wanted to do was go Mormon fundamentalist hunting down in Colorado City / Hilldale but the hikes through the park were amazing -- monsterous pink, orange and red walls, beautiful crisp and cold air.

The Blue Plate - San Francisco

Went to the Blue Plate last night for dinner and got lucky. Primetime (Fri. 8PM), yet my date and I got in with only a few minutes wait. Obviously this restaurant has been around for a few years so the mad rush to get in has worn off to some extent I suppose.

If you haven't been yet, BP is a cozy, comforting place with a nice wood and home like interior, lots of engaging art on the walls and a couple of cool old skateboards hung up right above the counter (counter, nice feature). The grill is exposed with people cooking right behind the counter and adding to the delicious smells in the place.

Great place for a date, especially one with someone you're just getting to know or someone you've been running around with for awhile. Not extremely romantic, sexy or sceney so, for what that's worth.

Food: tasty with periods bland and over produced. We started with the shaved cabbage, walnuts, new york cheddar and apple salad. The cabbage was uber fresh and light. Cheese? Not enough. The apples were nice - overall a good starter. Then we busted into brussell sprouts. Pan roasted, served with toasted pecans and fried sage. My date loved them. I thought they were pretty good. Could have used a dusting of flavorful cheese (asiago, parmeasan) to make it come to life. Next, pan roasted scallops. Very good. Served with ham hock bits and a great little dressing. They were done to perfection --- a little crust on the outside --- buttery smooth on the inside. The main course - MEATLOAF. Good meatlof. Very good meatloaf. Nice and moist, juicy, fatty, tomato-y, spicy. Really good. Sort of melted in your mouth and wasn't dry in the least (see 'juicy, moist, buttery smooth').

Truth be told, we 'settled' for Blue Plate because the Front Porch was filled to the rim with people and we couldn't get in. Obviously everyone's heard about this place but still definitely worth a visit if you're finding yourself in the Mission and want to venture out past Cesar Chavez St.

I just got back from knee surgery. It was my second one, on the same knee due to what Randy thinks is epic flat landiings at Brighton back in school. I can't believe the number of times the nurses, pain killer folks (I can't spell anesthesiasologist) etc. asked me what knee it was that they were supposed to operate on. I can easily see how someone goes into surgery needing a skin graft or something and getting their ear clopped off. Anyway, Susan picked me up, took me home and now I'm waiting to eat something huge. Yvonne is hopefully on her way and we'll get down to business.
